Introduced in 2012, it made our 10Best Cars lists for 2015 and 2016. It's both a large luxury car and a performance car with an available, aptly named "Ludicrous Mode." At 4600 to 5000 pounds packed with 70 to 90 kWh of lithium-ion cells, the Tesla Model S is its own kind of moonshot with an entirely different take on what that means than did the GM EV1. There's even an optional Autopilot system that goes most of the way toward autonomous driving ability.

Thirteen years since its incorporation and eight orbits of the sun since introducing its first production car, in those terms, Tesla has outlasted nearly every other new startup auto company since Porsche and Ferrari and Lamborghini were born after WWII.
Electric cars were always a joke until Elon Musk and his partners started Tesla Motors. The disruptive Tesla Roadster ripped from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. When the Model S appeared in 2012, it wasn't much slower. And last year Tesla gave us the P85D. Hell's a-blazin'!
