The original Corvette ZR-1 was a departure from every other Corvette to that point.

When it debuted, the ZR-1 had something that was in no other Corvette to that point: a V8 with dual overhead cams. This engine was a new design, developed by Lotus, which was owned by GM at the time, and built by Mercury Marine.

Yes, boat people building a car engine. Not that it made a difference. The ZR-1 was the highest performance Corvette ever when it debuted, which makes sense since that name is only used to denote the fastest and quickest Corvette on the market.

And, fun fact, the 2019 ZR1 has double the power of the original 375-horsepower ZR-1.
