Is the Honda Civic Type R the Greatest Hot Hatch?

Honda's new Type R is brilliant. But is it the best?

The Civic Type R is the first Honda-badged Type R to ever be sold in the US, and the first car with a Type R badge since the brilliant Integra Type R. That car was so good that driving one a few months ago led editor-at-large Sam Smith to buy one nearly immediately after.

Type Rs of old had a lot to love, but one of the best features has to be the high-revving VTEC inline-four. These engines would scream to redline unlike anything else.

The new Civic Type R has a wonderful, wonderful chassis, but the revs are gone, replaced by mid-range torque from the turbocharged 2.0 liter engine. Yes, it still has VTEC, but it's all down low. Has that ruined the driving experience?

That's what we aimed to find out during our Performance Car of the Year testing at NCM Motorsports Park this fall. The biggest problem was the heat, it was boiling outside and the Type R didn't love how warm it was. But that didn't stop us from getting some quality time on track in it.
