The Range Rover Sport SVR Is the Classy Thundertruck

The Range Rover that's more at home on the road than off of it.

Range Rovers have long been considered some of the greatest, most rugged, off-road vehicles ever built. As the lineup expanded to include the Range Rover Sport, Evoque, and most recently, the Velar, all the models have maintained that off-road cred.

One model might be more credible on the road than off it. The Range Rover Sport SVR has a 575 supercharged V8 and set an 8:14 lap on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe a few years ago. At that time, it was a record, though it has since been broken.

The SVR may no longer hold any records, but it's also probably the sweet spot in the hot SUV lineup. It's not as brash as a Cherokee Trackhawk, not as focused as a BMW X5M. It's the middle ground, a devastatingly fast SUV that still manages to fly under the radar. It also maintains all the off-roading equipment you'd expect from a Range Rover, like hill descent control and adjustable suspension. It just doesn't have tires that would be suitable for going off-road. Not that you'll ever do that anyway.

But it's nice to think that you can.
