Purists, shield your eyes. You're not going to like this car. It's a BMW 1-series that's been converted into a drift car, and had its factory engine swapped out for a naturally aspirated V-8 built by Mercedes-AMG. Yes, you read that right. The engine from the C63 and the SLS AMG. It sounds as great as you'd expect, and it's in Poland.
Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
Like most race cars, this 1-Series has been completely gutted inside and out, and rebuilt with competition-rated parts. The M156 V-8 engine makes an impressive 550 horsepower, sending power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission from a diesel Mercedes, and a limited-slip differential built by Winters Performance.
There's a fire-suppression system onboard, and a roll cage that meets all major safety requirements for drift events in Europe. The seller has included a YouTube video of the car drifting to show off its capabilities, and its wonderful exhaust note. This does not sound like your average 1-Series.
The car is currently with a Buy It Now Price of €29,900 (around $33,600 at current exchange rates). Pretty reasonable for the amount of custom work done and parts included, we'd say. But because this car is less than 25 years old, and not a factory-built race car, you'd likely have a hard time legally importing it to the US. Still, this thing is cool as hell.
