Ron Howard's upcoming movie Rush portraying the 1976 showdown between Niki Lauda and James Hunt won't be hitting theaters until September, but we already have word of another F1 movie in the works. In fact, it's reportedly been in development for three years, but now it seems the film won't make it through to completion after all.
The production in question was to center around three-time F1 champion Jackie Stewart and his teammate Francois Cevert, and was to be directed by Brokeback Mountain producer William Pohlad. However, due to the reported objection of Sir Stewart's wife, Lady Helen Stewart, this film may never reach cinemas. Apparently, the film was to portray Helen and Francois having an affair, a fabrication which the Stewarts—childhood sweethearts who met when they were just sixteen—vehemently deny. Whether there's any truth to the matter or not, without that element of the plot, the film's producers are reportedly abandoning the project altogether. For our part, we hope they'll find a way around it and bring the movie to a theater near us.
