Update 12/3/18: This golden Ford GT model ended up —around double the initial $30,000-$40,000 estimate. Our original article regarding the sale of this 1:25 scale car, originally published November 28th, 2018, can be seen below.

We've seen some expensive scale model cars and engines before, but this is one of the most extreme examples we've come across yet. It's a 1:25 scale 2006 Ford GT made in gold. Yes, real, actual gold. It's up for bidding right now, with a sale estimate between $30,000 and $40,000. Wow.

Despite its size, it seems you do get a lot of craftsmanship for money. Assembled by in Grosse Point, Michigan, the car is made from numerous different custom 18-karat gold pieces, with an interior, engine bay, and front compartment. The doors swing open to reveal a painstakingly detailed cabin with things like a steering wheel, pedals, and a dashboard. The wheels are wrapped in real rubber, and the supercharged engine is easily spotted through the rear window frame. There are even exhaust pipes, a diffuser, and a license plate that reads "FORD 1." The model is just over seven inches long, and weighs in at 3.25 pounds. A specialized plastic case with a mirrored base for the car will also be included in the sale.

As expensive at it is, the model isn't perfect. Sotheby's points out minute scratching along the body, and rubbing along where the doors open and close. Still, being made of gold, we can understand where the price estimate is coming from. Bidding is currently at $24,000 with five days remaining. As-is, it's worth more than all three of my cars combined (though that's not really saying much).

Chances are if you're in the market for a trinket like this, you either have a last-gen Ford GT of your own, or you're really, really obsessed with expensive scale model cars. We think it'd make a great gift for the GT owner in your family (if you can afford it, that is). .
