Porsche, as many of you know, is a notable omission in the Gran Turismo video game series. The company finally came to Forza Motorsport 6 earlier this year, but issues over licensing have so far kept Porsche out of GT. That's a shame, because it means we won't see a Vision Gran Turismo concept from the company, but a handful of Shanghai designers took it upon themselves to imagine what just such a machine could look like.
They're calling it the , and as the name implies, it's a tribute to the famous 908 race car, specifically the Langheck coupe. The concept borrows liberally from the 908 LH, but also includes details from modern Porsches like the 918 Spyder and the Mission E concept. This might not be official, but Porsche could easily pass it off as its own work.
, the team consists of car designers working in China for companies like Chery and Qoros. Based on the badging, the 908-04 Concept appears to be a hybrid, but the team says it's fairly old-school in its simplicity.
"We wanted to create a car that nobody makes anymore," writes exterior designer Alan Derosier. "A 'back-to-basics' kind of feel, mainly focused on generating a feeling for the love of racing."
The team hasn't released too many interior renderings yet, but there's tons of exterior images to pore over. Porsche geeks will love the history-referencing details featured on the 908-04 Concept–my favorite are the 956-inspired BBS wheels.
This concept makes a very strong case for Porsche and Gran Turismo to finally agree to collaborate. We'd love to drive Porsche's regular cars in the game, but we really want a go in this.
