Subaru has built a lot of rally-inspired WRXs, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was around for years, but of all their many variants, these are the kings: The Subaru Impreza 22B STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition. Thanks to the Gran Turismo video game series and rally heroes like Makinen, and Subaru ace Colin McRae, the 22B and the Evo VI became legends. But do they live up to the hype?
Who are we kidding with that rhetorical question? Of course they do. Each of these cars represented the pinnacle of what their manufacturers were capable of in the early 1990s, and are two of the finest performance cars to ever come from Japan. got the pair together for this video, with R&T contributor Chris Chilton behind the wheel to give them a proper evaluation.
Both cars have clever all-wheel drive systems and turbocharged four-cylinders making around 300 hp, but each has its own charecter. The 22B is defined by its torquey, high-revving 2.2-liter engine, while the Evo impresses with its sharp turn-in and totally neutral handling balance.
With only 424 examples built, the 22B has climbed in value like an air-cooled 911, but the relatively more common Tommi Makinen is still reasonably priced. Either way, we'll have to wait until they're eligible to import into the U.S. under the 25-year rule.
We have a feeling they'll be worth the wait.
