Now here's an opportunity that doesn't come along, uh, ever. The first Buick GNX sold to the public, chassis #003, is where it'll be sold with no reserve. Remember the time a GNX sold for record-setting $165,000? We're betting that record now has an expiration date.
According to , GNXes #001 and #002 are still owned by GM, so this is as early a GNX as you could possibly buy. In its first year of life, Buick loaned out #003 for magazines—including Road & Track—to test, accruing around 8000 miles in the process. It was then sold to Fischer Buick of Troy, Mich., who then sold it to its first private owner in August 1988. That owner put under 3000 miles on it before selling it in 1989, and since then, it's been stored in a climate-controlled garage. Currently, it only has 10,790 miles on its odometer.
But since storing a car for years often ruins all of its mechanicals, this car has been recently restored to new, driving condition. So, you could put some miles on it, if you wanted to.
As a refresher, just over 500 GNXes were built by Buick, each equipped with a 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 making 300 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque—big numbers for 1987. Our testing saw the GNX run to 60 mph in around 5.7 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds at 104 mph. That made the GNX quicker than a Corvette, and we suspect, many at Chevy not too happy.
Today, GNX #003 presents in beautiful condition inside and out, and it comes with all the paperwork you could hope for. All the magazines that featured the car are included too—a nice bonus, we think.
This car will be sold at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction with no reserve. It's not the lowest-mileage GNX in existence, but it has to be the most special. Bring your checkbooks.
