The Nissan NX2000 Was the Perfect Weirdo Alternative to the Sentra SE-R

It's mostly forgotten today, but the NX2000 was a great sport compact.

To replace the Pulsar NX, Nissan created this Sentra-based coupe in 1990. The NX2000's looks were controversial at the time, but under the skin lied a really excellent performance car. This was basically an upgraded Sentra SE-R wearing different, and arguably more interesting bodywork.

To be honest, I forgot the NX2000 car existed until MotorWeek posted its 1991 review to its YouTube channel this morning. MotorWeek came away impressed from the NX, citing its light, nimble chassis and good brakes as particular high points. The optional T-Tops were a great bonus too.

Watching this, we can't help but get nostalgic for this era of Nissan. This was back when you could walk into a Nissan dealership and pick up a 300ZX or a 240SX. And if you were in Japan, you could have a Skyline GT-R or the rally-ready Pulsar GTi-R. Today, Nissan offers just two performance cars, the aging GT-R and 370Z.
