The P1800 is arguably the most beautiful car Volvo ever made. But it didn't have much power to back up its looks. If you were expecting a rocket ship of a GT car, you went to the wrong place.

That's where owner and builder Dean Williams came in. He's the same master craftsman who built that fantastic rear-wheel drive motorcycle-engined Honda N600 we showed you back in 2016. Now he's back with this P1800 project, and it's just as cool.

Gone is the stock 1.8-liter engine, replaced with a 2.0-liter turbocharged Chevy Ecotec four-cylinder tuned to 300 horsepower. Torque travels to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox sourced from a Saturn Sky Redline to a limited-slip differential.

Like the N600 linked above, the Volvo uses an independent rear suspension setup from an early Miata. The front suspension remains unchanged, and the brakes have been upgraded.

Matt Farah got a chance to take the 300-horsepower Volvo for a run through the canyons, and found it a joy to drive despite the car's lack of power brakes and unfinished interior. Watch for yourself.
