The FIA limited Group 5 sports car engines to just 3.0 liters for the 1972 season. That effectively killed the dominant Porsche 917, with its 5.0-liter flat-12, but it did give rise to the Matra-Simca MS670 and its 3.0-liter V12. Few Le Mans-winners sound so good.
