Air-cooled Porsche 911 prices have skyrocketed these past few years, so much so that rarer models like the Carrera RS have evolved from pricy driver's cars to full-on collector pieces. If you're looking for the RS experience, but don't want to pay absurd auction prices, there's at least one shop that can build the perfect 911 for you.
, a California-based shop specializing in all things air-cooled Porsche, offers restoration programs to turn normal air-cooled 911s into perfectly crafted RS replicas, giving drivers the experience of Porsche's top-tier model without the top-tier price. Our pal Jeff Glucker of got his hands on one, and calls it "vintage Porsche motoring at its best."
The Makellos RS comes with all the cosmetics needed to make it look like a true RS, a 2.7-liter flat-six making 220 horsepower, a short-ratio manual transmission, a short-shift kit, cross-drilled brake rotors, upgraded bushings, beefier sway bars, and Koni shocks. There's even a set of period-correct bucket seats with houndstooth inlays. The price? Just around $120,000—not cheap, but a far cry from current RS asking prices.
