As far as parking lot mishaps go, this is about as bad as it gets. The driver of this rental van just bonked a beautiful little Porsche into a canal. It's so swift, so perfectly aligned, it's almost hilarious. Until you put yourself in the shoes of the Porsche owner.
This groaner of a clip comes to us by way of , a London-based book company that calls itself "the world's first crowdfunding publisher." The company tweeted photos of the poor Porsche in the drink this morning:
The folks at Unbound sure know how to spin a story. A few minutes later came an update:
Eventually, the car was removed, though it was looking a little worse for wear after its bath:
Then came the big reveal: Unbound had gotten security camera footage of the incident as it happened:
Wanna see what happened? Unbound's neighbors, a coffee shop called , caught footage of the incident as it unfolded. Warning: There's some adult language in this video clip.
Oof. It seems like the van driver couldn't see the tiny Porsche in their mirrors, and assumed the parking spot was empty. Perhaps they had their mirrors adjusted too high to catch the roofline of the low-slung 356. Perhaps they were just distracted. Either way, it's almost comical watching that van—which appears to be from European rental agency Sixt—punting the poor Porsche into the waterway.
Thankfully, folks on the scene report that the baby-blue Porsche was a replica, rather than a genuine 356 Speedster. That's a relief, as it means the car is valued at far less than the incredibly rare late-1950s Porsche it's styled after. Still, it's some bad luck for the owner.
As for the folks at Unbound, they seem to realize the quality of the video footage they got their hands on:
