Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
The seller purchased this Jeep all the way back in 1982, and slowly built it up to what you see here today. The original engine has been replaced with a 355 cubic-inch Chevy V8, getting power to the rear wheels with a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. There's also a roll cage, racing seats, harnesses, a wheelie bar, and drag slicks. According to the ad's description, the leaf springs, steering race, gas tank are original. Despite the hardcore setup, it's apparently still registered for street use, which is cool.
I managed to find a video of this very Jeep doing a couple of runs at Byron Dragway in Illinois back in 2015, which can be seen below. Thanks to that 81-inch wheelbase, the driver has absolutely no trouble lifting the front wheels at the launch. According to the seller, it can get into the 11-second range in the quarter-mile.
This Jeep is currently listed . Considering the amount of time and effort put into this thing to make it drive well on the strip, we'd say that's a pretty good deal—though we'd probably bring a trailer, as driving it on the street for any long period of time probably wouldn't go over too well.
