If you're planning a cross-continental drive around the world, you have a lot of reliable, practical cars to choose from. Odds are, the Porsche 928 is pretty far down your list. While it's a wonderful grand tourer, it's not the obvious choice for such a challenging journey. Well, the owner of this 928 bucked convention, and found out, it makes for one hell of a travel companion.

Porsche interviewed Philippe Delaporte, the owner of this 928, and his two sons, Thibault and Baudouin, to see why they made this seemingly odd choice. Philippe fell in love with the car's design back when it was new, and knew he had to have one. He wanted to to take it on an adventure, so he increased the ride height, fit winter tires and two full-size spares—one mounted behind the front seats, and the other mounted on the roof. The family would go on to drive the Silk Road, then eventually, the entire globe.

This 928 hasn't lived a normal life, but we think it's all the better for it. The family has since retired the car from long-distance journeys, but never plans to sell it. The most important part about a car is its story, and this car has a good one.
