Back in the day, your Mustang had to be practical as well as stylish.

The original Mustang was a sports car for the masses, and Ford sold them by the millions. One reason why: it was actually quite the practical car, as this in-period advertising film shows.

This two-minute ad, uploaded to the Ford Heritage channel on YouTube, details some of the useful features of the new-for-'65 2+2 Mustang coupe. One of the coolest pieces of engineering is the rear seat area, which, when not in use, can fold down on itself and create a surprisingly large, flat storage area. Additionally, there's a pass-through panel between the cabin and trunk area, perfect for skis or ladders. That's a feature that even some new cars still don't have.

All these features, three body styles and three different sizes of V-8 engine, made the Mustang appealing to just about anyone. No wonder it became an icon.
