There's a nice car for sale in South Carolina right now. There are probably lots of nice cars for sale in South Carolina right now, actually—but this one's special. It's a Mk2 Ford Escort—a car that was never sold stateside when new. You should buy it.
Welcome to You Must Buy, our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.
Since the Mk2 Escort was never officially brought to this side of the pond, it's pretty rare to see one for sale here. But according to the listing on eBay Motors, this car has a clean South Carolina title, which means it's already gone through the process of being registered for our roads, and you should have no trouble registering it in any state you want. It also looks to be in fantastic shape, with a clean engine bay, nicely sculpted custom fender flares, and a massive sound system occupying the space where the rear seats used to be.
Though the listing's description is limited, the seller says the engine displaces 2.0 liters, feeding power to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. Rust is a common issue for early Escorts, but this one seems to be fairly clean underneath judging by the pictures. Interestingly, the car also seems to be equipped with some sort of hydraulic handbrake—an accessory most commonly used for drifting. It's not mentioned anywhere in the ad, but honestly, if I were buying this car, I'd probably keep it installed. In fact, I think I'd just strip the whole interior out, throw in a roll cage, and take it stage rallying. That's what these things are meant to do, right?
with a Buy It Now price of $19,000.
