Three Examples of Jeremy Clarkson Skiing Jaguars

For some reason, Mr. Clarkson seems to be obsessed with skiing in, or sometimes behind a Jaguar. It's been his favorite sport since 2001.

Jag-skiing. That's what the sixth episode of The Grand Tour's second season was all about, accompanied by the running gag that Jaguar drivers prefer not to pay for their things. It's not a new concept from that trio by any stretch, but the production team knows very well that seeing Jeremy Clarkson's worried face behind the steering wheel on the edge of a snowy summit never gets old.

Nor does the line "Is your car crabbing as well for absolutely no reason?" Apart from driving down a ski slope?

But this recent clip also served as a reminder that this by no means was Clarkson's first Jag-skiing rodeo.

In fact, this weird hobby of his all started all the way back in 2001, when he had a BBC show titled 'Speed', detailing the history of fast vehicles in an entertaining fashion. As you would imagine, it was filled with power and speed, and at some point, it also involved a red Jaguar X-Type driving down a steep slope.

The X-Type may have been based on Ford's CD132 platform, thus sharing a lot with the Ford Mondeo. But at launch in 2001, it was also only available with 3.0 V6 producing 228 horsepower, and full-time all-wheel drive. Not bad for some winter action.

Three years later, Andy Wilman's new format Top Gear was already in its forth season, and a new X-Type variant came out, featuring Ian Callum's first major work for Jaguar: a wagon tailgate.

Clarkson decided to make fun of the British authorities for overreacting a mild snowfall, pointing out that the X-Type's all-wheel drive was more than enough to cope with the task at hand, despite being a basic system with a 60/40 torque split front to rear via a viscous coupling locking planetary gear differential.

In fact, he got so comfortable with how straight Jag's compact executive estate was tracking in the slush that he suggested buyers of the X-Type wagon shouldn't bother driving to the mountains at all. According to Top Gear, Jaguar made the perfect ski lift, with more cargo space than in the BMW 3-Series Touring, the Audi A4 Avant, or the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate.
