For most of us (except a few folks in the office), this Super Bowl commercial was the first real look at Nissan's bizarrely fantastic GT-R LM NISMO Le Mans prototype. And while it didn't delve too deeply into the Ben Bowlby weirdness under the red wrap (the front-engined, mechanically FWD powertrain with additional hybrid power provided to both axles), it told a pretty good story. Fathers, sons, racing … it tugged just the right amount of sentimental strings without drowning in sap.
Of course, it took a lot more than 90 seconds to produce the spot. Nissan put together a behind-the-scenes video featuring most of the major players—Bowlby, NISMO honcho Darren Cox, Gran Turismo Academy grad and GT-R LM pilot Jan Mardenborough, and even the new Nissan Maxima.
