In 1972, a good doctor payed $6,855 for this Mercedes-Benz W 108 by sending 36 $190 checks to his dealer. Also known as the 280SE, this luxury sedan represented the middle of the S-Class range, hiding an overbuilt 4.5 V8 under its long hood producing 175 horsepower and a whole lot more torque.

The W108 also came with a rich interior featuring acres of thick leather and real wood, trimmed with chrome garnished around a giant steering wheel for that unmistakable nautical feel. Air-conditioning and a Becker radio completed the land yacht package, and after 45 years, its doors still fit like a glove made of thick steel.

Current owner Warner managed to get the entire thing for just $7,000. And it had just 75,000 original miles, and all the service records since new. Now, the 280SE is his 12mpg daily driver in Los Angeles. Rides don't get much classier than that.
