The early Volkswagen Bus is known to most enthusiasts as a cult classic van with a tiny little air-cooled motor in the back. It didn't strain any necks with its acceleration, but its timeless styling made people fall in love. What better way to pay tribute to the VW Bus than by taking one and turing into the most absurd dragster on the road? That's what this fella did.
According to , hot-rodder Mike Rowan found a forgotten 1963 Volkswagen Panel Bus in a field, and bought it for $275. Instead of restoring it to its original state, he decided to go wild. Rowan claims that in only six weeks, he was able to transform the bus into a full-on drag machine, with a mid-mounted big-block 468 cubic-inch V8 and 150-shot of nitrous. Not surprisingly, it's ridiculous.
To put all 586 horses to the road, Rowan swapped in a Lincoln Continental differential and some truly huge drag tires. Probably a smart idea considering the huge increase in power.
Rowan says that with all that thrust, his Bus can run the quarter-mile in 12.2 seconds. That might not sound fast for a car equipped with nitrous and drag tires, but considering the thing is shaped like a brick, we'll cut Rowan some slack.
Watch as he talks us through the build, and shows us just how over-the-top an innocent little VW Bus can get.
