Some people consider the E46-generation BMW M3 the best M3 ever made. With its good looks, inherent balance, and lovely straight-six engine, it checked all the boxes for enthusiasts looking for a car that could do it all. Some people consider it perfect, but there's always someone who thinks the E46 could use more power. That's how this car—equipped with an S65 V8—came to exist. And it somehow makes the third-generation M3 even better.
Technica Motorsports, a shop based in Atlanta, got a request to build an E46 M3 with the V8 from the following-generation E92 M3. The result is a surprisingly factory-looking build with a working dashboard and electronics. It retains all the good looks from that late '90s design, but hides over 400 horsepower under the hood.
Matt Farah from got the chance to get behind the wheel, and discovers just how factory-feeling this V8 E46 really is. If you didn't know any better, you'd think it came straight from Germany bone stock. That straight-six might be nice, but nothing beats a sorted V8.
