The Bugatti Chiron Can Get from 0 to 249 to 0 in Just 42 Seconds

That is ludicrous.

The Bugatti Chiron is all about big numbers. 1500 horsepower. 261 mph limited top speed. 16 cylinders. Four turbochargers. $2.7 million price tag. And now, it has an astonishing record for the run from 0 - 249 - 0 mph (0 - 400 - 0 kmh): 41.96 seconds.

The record was set in August by Juan Pablo Montoya, who you may know from his exploits in basically every racing series you've ever watched. Montoya used the Chiron's launch control and achieved the speed in just 3.116 km. That's just under two miles.

Let that sink in for second. Yes, a dragster can get to 300 mph in a quarter mile, wise guy, but this is a street-legal car that you could drive to the mall, if you wanted. Not that you would want to, as if you have a Chiron you likely don't need to go to shopping at Spencer's Gifts, but we digress.

The record has been certified by SGS-TÜV Saar and is the first planned record of the car. Bugatti does say in their official release that they are planning to set an all-out top speed record for production cars in 2018 with the Chiron. Rumor was that it could hit 288 mph with the limiter removed, but perhaps it could go even quicker. Maybe that's why it has a 500 kph (310 mph) speedometer.

We'll have to wait and see.
