Saab Turbo X

Smoked lamp lenses and a generous use of chrome.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the introduction of turbocharging to Saab's vehicles, the Swedish automaker has unveiled the Turbo X version of the 9-3 in both sedan and SportCombi body styles.

Saab Turbos in both the 99 and 900 series featured black as a signature color. In keeping with tradition, the Turbo X is offered in black only with matte gray titatium accents in place of chrome brightwork.

The Turbo X is powered by a twin scroll turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 producing 280 bhp. The engine is offered with a choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox, which is mated to an intelligent all-wheel-drive system. In addition, an electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle allows torque transfer of up to 40 percent of output between the rear wheels. Saab says the powertrain is good for 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration of 5.7 seconds.

The Darth Vader-like theme is carried through to the interior, which features black leather sport bucket seats with additional bolstering, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and carbon-fiber trim on the dash, console, glovebox and door inserts. Softer glove leather with perforated inserts is an extra-cost option. And like any true turbocharged sports car, the Turbo X features a boost gauge.
