Mercedes unveiled the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) at Frankfurt today, which will radically transform its exterior to achieve maximum aerodynamic capabilities. With a resulting coefficient of drag of 0.19, it is slipperier than a Tesla Model S, .
Eight segments from the car's rear extend and increase the overall length by 15 inches. Flaps in the bumper extend as well to improve air flow around the front end and front wheel arches. The rims reduce their concavity and the louvre from the front bumper improves underbody airflow by moving to the rear. This can all be achieved through a push of a button or after the car reaches 50 mph. Powered by a hybrid engine, the IAA concept makes 279 bhp and has an all-electric range of 41 miles.
Mercedes wanted to make a fun, morphing concept, and it's done just that. Will something like this ever make it to production? Probably not. But at least we have something cool to look at.
