Audi offering the new RS5 in five-door "Sportback" style isn't a surprise, but that doesn't make it any less exciting. Just look at it! It's a gorgeous green fastback with 444 horsepower. It might not be the RS4 Avant we crave, but it's a damn fine consolation prize.
Other than the new bodywork, the RS5 Sportback is exactly the same as its two-door counterpart. That means it gets a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and Quattro all-wheel drive. A mechanical center differential splits the torque 40:60 between the front and rear axles, but it can send up to 85 percent frontwards or 70 percent rearwards if needed. An electronic differential provides torque vectoring at the rear axle too.
As standard, the RS5 Sportback gets a fixed sport suspension, while adaptive dampers are optional. Audi says the RS5 Sportback will hit 60 mph in under four seconds and top speed is limited to 155 mph, while opting for the Dynamic package raises this to 174 mph.
Pricing for the RS5 Sportback hasn't been announced yet, but it should be very similar to the Coupe's $69,900 base price. It makes its debut today at a pre-New York Auto Show event, and it'll go on sale in the second half of this year.
