Adding to our on-going , albeit a bit belatedly, I note that wife Dottie and I are current custodians of our original R&T Long-Term Miata. This is the one used by Dottie and me as well as Andy and Patty Bornhop on our honeymoons (disclosure: same car, different honeymoons).
Also, even before this, I was the lucky R&T person invited to Japan for a secret clinic of the yet-unnamed "Lightweight Sports Car." Later, John Lamm and I returned to sample the car around Mazda's Myoshi test track. This was the trip I drove the first production MX-5 Miata and the first production Nissan 300ZX, both of which appeared on our March 1989 cover. A neat trip, that.
In 1990, I was able to scam one of the first MX-5s in Europe (where they were never known as Miatas) for a roundtrip from Frankfurt to the Monaco Grand Prix. In those heady days we stayed at the Loews at the hairpin, and the hotel kindly parked my red MX-5 amongst other red cars—all of them Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We ran a photo accompanying our September 1990 Monaco race report with the headline, "What's a nice little car like you doing in a place like this?"
I've had lots of fun with Miatas/MX-5s; come to think of it, I still do.
