Infiniti Project Black S Concept Is a 563 Horsepower Vision for a Fast Hybrid

Infiniti's latest prototype features a dual-hybrid powertrain for a zero-to-sixty run under four seconds. That's not bad for a Q60.

While Infiniti's VR30 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 400 horsepower in standard form, the Project Black S version offers 563, thanks to having three motor generator units onboard, in true F1-fashion. While the kinetic MGU-K harvests energy from braking, a pair of MGU-Hs generate power from the hot exhaust gases leaving the turbochargers. This means the Project Black S can produce electrical power under both braking and acceleration.

Infiniti wants to start phasing out gas engines in 2021, but that doesn't mean the brand can go full electric straight away. And an extended transition period can lead to a whole range of performance hybrids, possibly including a coupé like this, the Q60 Red Sport 400-based Project Black S. Combine 563 horsepower with Infiniti's new variable-compression technology, and we're in business.

With its wild wing and cut hood, the Project Black S prototype will debut at the Paris Motor Show on the 1st of October.
