A lot of water has flowed down the river closest to you since Cadillac started teasing us with its contemporary flagship concepts, the Ciel convertible (2011) and the Elmiraj coupe (2013). Now, they made a third one for Pebble Beach. This is 6 inches longer than , comes with four doors and a badge that says Escala (Spanish for scale) .
Since ex-Infiniti boss Johan de Nysschen took over, Cadillac stopped chasing the Germans with the CT6, cancelled its CT8 flagship and sent its board members for drinks after reading the latest from Bob Lutz here on Road & Track. Possibly.
Yet just before the CT8 got shelved, another crazy rumor surfaced about Cadillac's plans regarding an even bigger luxury sedan and an SUV that can be more luxurious than a maxed out Escalade. That might be Bentley's territory, but it's not like Cadillac hasn't been there before.
Johan de Nysschen now says the Escala is a concept with two objectives:
'First, Escala is a statement of intent for the next iteration of the Cadillac design language, and also technical concepts in development for future Cadillac models. Secondly, Escala builds Cadillac's aspirational character, signaling the brand's return to the pinnacle of premium. Escala is a concept car, but one based upon the unrelenting rise of our product substance.
Depending on the development of market segment for large luxury sedans, Escala is a potential addition to our existing product plan.'
Talking of future Cadillac technologies, the Escala is built around Cadillac's new mixed-material RWD architecture, powered by GM's 4.2-liter twin-turbo with cylinder deactivation.
Inside, the cabin features what they call a 'dual personality', meaning that while the front is filled with gadgets, the rear is all about relaxation. Curved OLED screens provide the entertainment with a central control module that enables the driver to execute tactile commands in addition to voice and gesture control technology, while the rest of the interior is filled with hand cut-and-sewn materials.
There you have it people. This is 210.5 inches of pure American luxury straight out of Detroit, ready for purchase when you are.
