This year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has been great for fans of ultra-limited, ultra-gorgeous convertibles. Friday morning saw the debut of the Lamborghini Centenario Roadster, but on Friday night, Aston Martin had a lovely surprise for everyone. Aston chopped the roof off its recently announced Vanquish Zagato to create the impossibly pretty Vanquish Zagato Volante.
I think you can debate endlessly whether the Vanquish Zagato is better looking in coupe or Volante form, but you can't argue that both aren't masterpieces. The rear end on the Volante is especially fantastic.
Aston Martin says the decision to build the Vanquish Zagato Volante was made after experiencing "overwhelming demand" for the coupe, but you have to imagine this car was in the works before the Coupe was even announced. In any case, production will be limited to just 99 examples, and naturally, you can customize the spec of yours to your heart's content.
The retractable soft top has been adapted from the standard Vanquish Volante, but otherwise, the mechanical specifications are identical to the Zagato coupe. That means that you get an upgraded version of Aston's familiar 5.9-liter V12, which is tuned for 592 horsepower in this application.
You can bet that many of the 99-car production run was sold before the announcement was made, but hopefully a few are still unspoken for. Customer deliveries are expected to begin next year, so call up your Aston dealer if you want one.
