The Group is cross-pollinating its British brands by injecting the nimble with a smidgen of the luxury and refinement of a Rolls-Royce. The result is the Mini "Inspired by Goodwood," shown for the first time during the Shanghai Auto Show. The petite proportions of the Mini have, thankfully, not been encumbered with the addition of a massive Rolls-Royce grille and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament—although you know someone, somewhere, has already done it.
The biggest changes are found inside, where the Mini Inspired by Goodwood features much of the same leather and wood trim you'd find in a . Almost everything in the cabin—including the dashboard, seats, center console and roof lining—is finished in the Rolls-Royce-exclusive "Cornsilk" color, which is a very soft and warm shade of beige. Walnut Burr trim, another Rolls-Royce add-on, covers much of the Mini's dash and door-handle surfaces.
As you'd imagine, the seats are trimmed in leather (cornsilk-hued, of course). So is the top of the dashboard, albeit in contrasting black nappa leather. A "piano black" surface has been added to the controls on the steering wheel, along with the row of controls below the instrument panel.
To anyone not ensconced in the swank cabin, a set of 17-in. alloy wheels and copious amounts of external badges mark this as one Mini with a whole lot more. For some reason, Mini has opted to combine the front fascia of the Cooper S with the plain hood of the diesel-powered Mini Cooper D. Apparently air scoops are too déclassé for a Mini of this pedigree. Buyers can choose between Diamond Black metallic, a Rolls-Royce color, or a Reef Blue metallic paintjob.
Unfortunately, BMW and Mini engineers weren't quite able to shoehorn in the twin-turbo 6.6-liter V-12 from the Rolls-Royce Ghost. So the owner of a Mini Inspired by Goodwood will have to make do with the 181-bhp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine from the Cooper S model. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, but we're guessing most buyers of this luxury-laden Mini will opt for the 6-speed automatic.
Mini says only 1000 Inspired by Goodwood models will be built, with production set to commence in early 2012.
