Hold on to your mustaches—the '80s are back at Audi. The German automaker resurrected the S1 nameplate with the three-door S1 and the five-door S1 Sportback. And
if they're anything like their predecessor, it's probably safer if we don't get these hot hatches in the US. How do we know? We have a bit of a history with Audi's rudest of 1980s rally cars.
The S1 really is a lot of car in such a small package. The new 2.0 TFSI engine puts out 231 horsepower and 272.90 lb-ft of torque, shooting the little guy
from 0 to 62 in 5.8 seconds in the three-door variant. Add to that a short-shift six-speed manual gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive, and you've got a car asking
for trouble. Oh, and did we mention it gets up to 40.3 mpg? With those numbers, it's asking for a lot of trouble.
Audi isn't afraid to remind us where the S1 came from. The two models hit the stand screaming in bright yellow and red, a marked contrast to Audi's
standard, elegant all-white booth presence. Pulling these colors from their '80s racing relatives, the loud statement continues in the interior with bright
contrast stitching, red air-vent accents, high-gloss plastic around the shifter in either black, red, or yellow, and—most notably—the quattro-branded
body-color hardback seats. On the exterior, the S1 gets quad exhaust tips, LED taillights that pop off of the contrasting black rear graphic, and an optional
sculpted roof spoiler to really get in touch with its rally roots.
This is a car that guarantees you won't need coffee in the morning for your daily pick-me-up.
The Audi S1 arrives in the UK this spring starting at £24,900 (around $40,000).
