Today's Formula E race car is, frankly, a little bland. It's just sort of a generic open-wheel race car, with not much personality to speak of. That changes in 2019, because Formula E will race the car you see here, and it looks exactly as futuristic as you'd hope. Between this car, and a ton of factory-backed entries from big automakers, Formula E's fifth season could be the one that finally breaks the series into the mainstream.

Formula E didn't release many technical details on its new car, but it did reveal that this is the first car ever to be designed by the sport's governing body, the FIA. This car will also use a new battery supplied by McLaren that offers double the range and output of the current Williams-supplied battery. That means no more mid-race car swaps, and hopefully, more speed.

You've probably also noticed that this car is equipped with a "halo" head-protection device, something that should be coming to F1 later this year. Formula E says more details will be revealed about this car when it makes its in-person debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Season five is shaping up to be a good one for Formula E. The series will have have factory-backed entries from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Porsche, , much fewer technical restrictions for its cars. They might all look more-or-less like what you see here, but there will be key technical differences that'll make, and break, some teams.
