There's been a joke for a while that F1's new halo head protection makes the cars look like flip flops. There have even been comparisons of a Ferrari-branded flip flop and the halo as a meme.
But it appears McLaren boss Zak Brown, a "sponsorship guru" within F1, saw more to it than just a meme. He saw an actual opportunity:
Gandy's is a British flip flop brand created by Rob and Paul Forkan after their parents were tragically killed in the 2004 tsunami in southeast Asia. The brothers also created a charity, , to aid underprivileged children. McLaren and Gandy's will partner for the Australian Grand Prix and the company will produce 100 pairs of a limited edition flip flop, with all proceeds from sales going to Orphans For Orphans. A great idea for a great cause.
