The World Motorsport Council has gathered today in Manila for its second meeting of 2018, to conclude the sixth FIA Sport Conference, held for the first time in Asia. : The FIA has announced a new "Hypercar" designation for the LMP1 class, the highest category of the World Endurance Championship, as part of the 2020 Technical Regulations.
The FIA explains the new designation as follows:
- A budget target of one-quarter of current LMP1 budgets
- Freedom of design for brands based on a "Hypercar" concept
- There's also a plan to encourage the participation of female drivers in the FIA World Endurance Championship
The hypercar part is particularly exciting. McLaren recently built a road-legal racing car featuring active aero called the Senna, and the GTR version of that is coming. There's also Aston Martin's Red Bull Racing-engineered, Cosworth-powered Valkyrie AMR, shown above, offering F1-beating performance right off the shelf. And since both cars are about to enter production right around now, 2020 sounds like a match made in ... Manila, as it happens.
As far as Formula 1 goes, for 2019, the FIA included aerodynamic changes to the front wing, brake ducts and rear wing, all aimed at improving overtaking. Because the boredom has to stop.
