The #1 Audi R10 TDI of Allan McNish, Emanuele Pirro and Dindo Capello qualified second for Petit Le Mans in 2008, setting up a nice battle between it and the slightly faster #7 Peugeot. Then on a formation lap, McNish crashed. The Audi team worked their magic, and got the car back together, but it was two laps down from the entire grid.
Given these circumstances, you'd think an overall victory was impossible, but don't forget, this was one of the greatest endurance-racing teams of all time. And McNish was determined to fix his mistake, driving like hell for his stints in the 10-hour, 1000-mile race at Road Atlanta.
McNish and the Audi crew pulled it off in the end, making this arguably the greatest running of Petit Le Mans ever. To mark the ten-year anniversary of one of his best drives, McNish spoke with our motorsport correspondent Marshall Pruett for a podcast. And for your entertainment, Pruett put together 40 minutes of on-board highlights from the #1 Audi as it charged towards this most improbable victory.
You can watch the 2018 Petit Le Mans this Saturday on Fox Sports 1 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, with continuing coverage on Fox Sports 2 from 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM. And after the finish, you can do what McNish did and eat an entire box of Krispy Kreme donuts.
