Taking corners well isn't the only thing the MR2 can do. With enough mods, it can be a proper drag machine.

We love the Toyota MR2 because it's a lightweight mid-engine delight. Toyota reliability combined with serious handling prowess make it a true joy to own. But taking corners well isn't the only thing the MR2 can do. With enough modifications, it can be an impressive drag-racing machine.

The YouTube channel was on the ground at the Cootamundra Airport drag shootout this year in New South Wales, Australia, to check out some of the machines on hand. Perhaps the most interesting vehicle to make an appearance was this, a black second-generation MR2 with a turbocharged Honda K24 engine making an astounding 900 horsepower. Backed up by a sequential gearbox and a set of massive drag radials, it laid down low nine-second quarter-mile passes all day before finally setting a quickest run of 8.8 seconds at 167 mph.

That run was enough to break the record for four-cylinder-powered vehicles at the event, earning the owner a cash prize. Well-deserved, we'd say.
