Racing Up Pikes Peak in Zero Visibility Is a Heart-Pounding Terror

Pikes Peak is a serious challenge, even when the conditions are perfect. That's why we're so impressed by this video of Robb Holland hustling his 500-hp Audi up the hill through thick, nasty fog. It's nerve-wracking as hell to watch.

Holland teamed up with Bluewater Performance of North Washington, Colorado with the goal of setting a new Pikes Peak front-wheel drive record, vying to beat the time set by Acura last year. His car is an Audi S3 tuned to 500 horsepower and converted to front-wheel drive, sporting carbon fiber bodywork from the S3 TCR race car.

The team was out for testing this weekend, but the weather wasn't cooperating—fog layered most of the peak, bringing visibility down to nearly zero. Holland says he wouldn't normally run in these conditions, but access to the hill for practice or testing is hard to come by, so he and his team didn't want to waste the opportunity to collect vital data on the car. It makes for a nail-biting in-cabin video:

Even as a Pikes Peak veteran, Holland admitted the drive was tough.

"I have the course memorized so I knew what was coming up, but with no visibility you have no references to know how fast you're going," he said in a statement. "So it's a lot of educated guessing to figure out where to brake."

We bet. Holland , driving a heavily modified Audi TT RS. We'll be watching to see if he takes back his record at this year's running.
