Rally cars need some serious equipment to stay in one piece during competition. In addition to beefed-up tires, competitors need heavy-duty wheels to make sure a car doesn't get stranded out in the field. The Team O'Neil rally school is here to explain to us what makes rally wheels so much better than your run-of-the-mill street rims.
Unlike normal wheels, which will likely never see any sort of off-road action, rally-spec wheels have to deal with impacts from dips, large rocks, and even jumps. They're constructed from much thicker metal, designed to absorb impacts without deforming.
A rally wheel also needs to be able to secure a tire from de-beading while a car is going sideways, and protect the tire from sharp rocks that might slash its sidewall. Wheels like Method's 501 VT-Spec go a step further, built with a slightly larger outside diameter to help keep the tire securely mounted, and a pronounced lip to protect the rubber. And of course, any competition rally wheel has to be able to survive miles of driving with no tire at all. It happens.
