Ken Block—he of wild YouTube rally antics fame—has announced that he will compete in the 2010 World Rally Championship. Block, founder of DC shoes, will drive a—drum roll, please—a , a Focus RS prepared by M-Sports, the team headed by Malcolm Wilson, the longtime rally manager who played a big role in getting Ken to compete in the WRC. Driving for the new Monster World Rally Team—a team he has created and assembled—Block will compete in select rounds of the 2010 championship, with an eye toward developing his skills to launch a full assault on the World Rally Championship in 2011 and beyond.
Block in a Ford sure seems strange, given his longtime association with Subaru. And the switch to Ford appears to be a complete one, given that he is also set to compete in both the 2010 X Games and the Rally America series driving an all-new prepared by Olsbergs MSE.
From this fan's perspective, this is a great development. With Block's popularity in the U.S., the involvement of both Monster Energy drink and Ford, maybe we'll get some decent WRC television coverage here in the U.S.
Hat's off to Block for making the effort. But the Big Question remains: How is this American going to fare in the hard-fought WRC?
