Worldwide, Toyota's motorsport activities have been organized under three team banners; Toyota Racing, Lexus Racing, and GAZOO Racing, the later mainly in Japan. Toyota is shaking things up and consolidating it under two, rather than three, names: Toyota GAZOO Racing and Lexus GAZOO Racing.
Akio Toyoda made the announcement today in Toyota City, Japan. The change will affect racing efforts worldwide: World Endurance Championship, where Toyota runs the TS040 LMP1-H; World Rally Championship with the new Yaris WRC; Super GT; and efforts such as GAZOO's Lexus LFA Code X and Lexus Racing's RC F GT3.
Will it make much of a substantive difference? Probably not, although the company will integrate some of the supporting players (marketing, vehicle development, and technical support) into a new Motor Sports Group. A streamlined support structure should make for a more efficient motorsports operation, and shared vehicle development should allow knowledge to be shared more effectively between the various sub-teams … but this is all in theory, not necessarily in practice. Still, get used to seeing the word "GAZOO" plastered on more Lexus and Toyota race cars.
