The biggest debut at this year's 24 Hours of Daytona is inarguably the Ford GT, but Ferrari's got a trick up its sleeve too with the new 488 GTE. Our pals at RACER magazine got some pretty gnarly onboard footage of Alessandro Pier Guidi driving the Scuderia Corsa 488 GTE around a very wet Daytona for qualifying.
Like the excellent street car its based on, the 488 GTE uses a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 in place of the 458's naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8. The racing versions of the 458 never managed to win hearts like the Corvettes and 911s they competed, but they were very fast. The 488 GTE has a lot to accomplish.
At the hands of Guidi, the 488 seems to acquit itself well at an extremely wet Daytona. In these conditions, the track is extraordinarily fearsome, especially at the exit of the Bus Stop where Guidi nearly loses twice and we see a Ford GT on the grass.
With the 488, GT, the new M6 GT3 and requisite Corvette C.7Rs and 911RSRs, GTLM is quickly shaping up to be the class to watch at this year's Daytona 24.
