There's no question that the Porsche 911 GT2 RS will set an impressive Nurburgring lap time, really, the only question is how impressive its time will be. Remember that the new 911 GT3—which has 200 fewer horsepower than the GT2 RS—recently ran a 7:12.7 at the circuit. We don't know when we'll see an official 'Ring time for the GT2 RS, but Porsche Motorsport boss that it'll start with a 6.
In other words, the 911 GT2 RS will probably run under seven minutes on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe. Walliser seems to imply that Porsche hasn't yet done a 'Ring lap for the GT2 RS, but he's pretty confident it'll perform amazingly well.
"This is the seventh generation of the 911. It’s all about sevens… It’s 700 hp but it’s no seven at the Nurburgring," Walliser told Motoring. "Wait and see. Give us some time and we will check it."
Despite making its debut last week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the GT2 RS likely isn't done yet, with some final calibration work left before it arrives at dealers next year. Only when the GT2 RS is complete, Porsche will attempt a Nurburgring lap time.
Walliser also took a shot at Lamborghini—which recently took the production-car Nurburgring record away from Porsche 918 Spyder—when asked if the GT2 RS could beat the Huracan Performante's 6:52.01 lap.
"I will say one more thing about [the Nurburgring lap-time]… We [will] use the tires we sell to the customers. We [will] use the engine that the customer will have in his car. This is the Porsche approach," said Walliser. "I’m not going for lap times that the customer cannot achieve. Full stop. No comparison to competitors, but that is how we do it."
Is Walliser accusing Lamborghini of some Nurburgring trickery? Who knows, but Porsche is very proud when it comes to the Nurburgring. The previous-generation GT2 RS was code-named "Project 727" internally, a reference to the Nissan GT-R's 7:27 Nurburgring lap that Porsche was determined to beat. That GT2 RS ran a 7:18 'Ring lap, making it quicker than the GT-R and even the Carrera GT.
So will the GT2 RS beat the Huracan Perforamante? Your guess is as good as our. Draw your own conclusions.
