If You're Going to Buy a Ferrari, Buy a One-Off Ferrari

Why buy a 488 GTB when you can spend a few million more to get something unique like this, the SP38?

If you have a lot of money, you buy a Ferrari. But if you have a ton of money, like helicopter-on-a-yacht money, then you call Ferrari and have them build you something unique, a car nobody else will ever have. Cars like the SP12 EC built for Eric Clapton or the 458 Speciale MM one-offs are just two of the special models to emerge from Ferrari's bespoke division. The newest one is this, the SP38. It might be based on the 488 GTB, but you'd be hard pressed to recognize it.

That means it has a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 with 662 horsepower and 561 lb.-ft. of torque under the beautifully sculpted tri-louver rear decklid, complemented by quad taillights and a high-mounted twin-exit exhaust. Unlike most road-going Ferraris, the SP38 gets a proper wing, rising up from the body via either corner of the rear. The intakes and door handles have been incorporated into the doors, while the front clip has been shaped with inspiration from the ultra-limited Ferrari Sergio. No interior pictures have been released, though it's likely that looks close to a 488's cabin.

Ferrari didn't identify the customer taking delivery of the SP38, but says they have a "deep passion for motorsports." The car was delivered at Ferrari's Fiorano test track, and promptly taken on a series of hot laps.

The car will make its first public appearance at the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance this Saturday, May 26th, 2018. It certainly cost far more than a stock 488 GTB, but can you really put a price on having something unique?
