The tease is over. It did not last long. Just yesterday McLaren Automotive released a of the second model in the MP4-12C family – the 12C Spider.
Today it unveiled more details as well as a slew of photographs of the roadster version that McLaren claims delivers best-in-class performance. It has a Retractable Hard Top (RHT) folding roof system and a clear view of the engine is still available through a glass screen behind the tonneau cover.
With the roof raised the area under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area. McLaren has even designed bespoke luggage (two soft bags) specifically to fit this space and fortunately it is supplied as standard with every 12C Spider, which will save a customer a few bucks.
Both models have identical technical specifications and the 12C Spider barely gives up any ground to the hardtop version in performance. Its 0-62 mph time of 3.1 seconds is identical. It takes just one tenth of a second longer to get to 100 mph (6.1 secs vs. 6.0 secs) and it's top speed is all of 3 mph slower (204 mph vs. 207 mph).
The addition of the convertible roof system only adds 88 lbs to the weight of the fixed roof 12C as the 165 lb carbon fiber `MonoCell' requires no additional strengthening in the 12C Spider.
A windscreen behind the driver and passenger can be electronically lowered and raised. When the roof is lowered it acts as wind deflector to minimise disturbance to the 12C Spider's occupants. With the roof raised the rear window can be lowered, allowing the lucky occupants to enjoy the exhilarating noise of the 12C Spider's twin turbo 3.8-liter 616 bhp V-8 engine.
The world premiere of the 12C Spider will take place in California at Gooding & Company's Exclusive VIP Preview Reception on the evening of Friday, August 17th. It will then be displayed on the Concept Car Lawn throughout the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance weekend.
McLaren Automotive says the new 12C Spider will be priced from $265,750 ( $2500 shipping and handling) in the US and is now available to order. First deliveries to customers are planned for late December/early January.
McLaren is encouraging prospective customers and sports car fans, who can only dream of owning one, to visit the new 12C Spider online configurator, where it says there are literally millions of unique combinations. The 12C Spider configurator is now live .
