The Alpine A110 Holds Its Own Against a McLaren 570S

Are these the two best mid-engine sports cars on sale today? They might just be.

We're not getting the new Alpine A110 in the US, but we're still obsessing over it. Why? It's a gorgeous French alternative to the Porsche Cayman and Lotus Elise, and based on reviews from European media, it's pretty much as perfect as you'd hope a lightweight mid-engine sports car could be. Apparently, it's even good enough to stand tall next to a McLaren 570S.

Autocar brought these two together not because they're rivals—the McLaren costs over three times more—but because they share a similar ethos. Neither prioritizes numbers over feel, even though the McLaren offers 562 horsepower and is still capable of impressive lap times on a race track. They're both designed for maximum fun.

The A110 only has 250 horsepower from its little turbocharged four-cylinder, but it only weighs around 2400 lbs. That's not much more than a Miata, and it means it's a hoot to drive. It's certainly not as quick as the McLaren, but the testers at Autocar thinks it offers similar levels of fun.

I think what's so appealing about the A110 is how different it is than most sports cars today. With the exception of the Miata and Elise, none are so focused on light weight and real-world performance. And that focus means it can play with much more rarified machinery.
