Recent upgrades to BMW's concierge electronics suite—BMW Online—allows easy upgrades to the basic system. And the first app made available? Yelp.
Starting today, BMW customers with the Assist Convenience Plan, a navigation screen on the dashboard, and a BMW Online subscription can add Yelp immediately. That opens Yelp's popular data base of ratings for any imaginable service such as restaurants, parking garages, barber shops, even sky diving outfits (after reading Yelp posts about our local sky divers we'd be afraid if we wore three parachutes).
With BMW's text-to-speech capability, Yelp posts can be read out loud through the car's stereo system. The BMW Yelp application sorts search results by category, distance and star ratings. All pertinent business information is listed, of course. That includes the address, phone number and distance, along with the reviews.
BMW also notes that Yelp is just the beginning; BMW Online subscribers can anticipate many more apps in the near future. Because the new services are simple software downloads, no changes to the vehicle are required. The apps are downloaded via the new Applications screen.
BMW Online is available in 2009 and later 1, 3 and 7 Series the Z4; 2010 a later 5 and 6 Series, X5 and X6 and 2011 and later X3's.
