2018 BMW M3 CS: Here It Is

The BMW M3 is going on a diet, thanks to lots of carbon fiber and a stripped-out interior.

Earlier this year, BMW rolled out the M4 CS, a lighter, track-focused version of its M4 coupe. Just as predicted, the M3 is getting the CS treatment too, and it's headed for the US. With 453 horsepower and lots of new carbon fiber components, the CS will be the fastest, lightest M3 of its generation.

According to BMW, the M3 CS is 110 lbs lighter than the standard M3 thanks to a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof, front splitter, Gurney flap, and rear diffuser. With an estimated curb weight of 3520 pounds, the M3 CS—which comes standard with a dual-clutch transmission—is actually a little lighter than a base, manual-gearbox model.

Oh yeah, the M3 CS will only come with BMW's seven-speed DCT gearbox, just like the M4 CS. That gearbox mated with an engine that now produces 453 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. That's a small gain compared to the 444-hp Competition Package, but it's enough to make the CS the most powerful M3 ever, though its coupe sibling offered 503 hp in the M4 GTS. Anywho, BMW says the M3 CS will run from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 174 mph.

The chassis of the M3 CS isn't too different than that of the Competition Package, though it's been stiffened for track duty. It rides on gorgeous 19-inch wheels at the front with 20s in the rear, and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are optional.

Inside, there's lots of Alcantara trim complete with "CS" logos, a standard Harmon-Kardon sound system, and navigation. This may be a more track-focused M3, but it's not totally stripped out, like the M4 GTS.

BMW says that pricing will be announced at a later date and that US ordering begins next May. Around 1200 M3 CSes will be built worldwide, with around 550 earmarked for the US.
